Vic: Magnesium scrap burns in huge fire

MELBOURNE, Feb 10 AAP - Firefighters battling a 50-tonne magnesium fire in Geelong
this morning were hoping to stop the entire pile from being consumed.

An explosion and blaze, which ignited about 10.15pm (AEDT) last night, set off several
smaller explosions involving LPG cylinders.

About 40 Country Fire Authority (CFA) officers were at the scene at an industrial estate
in Buckley Grove in the suburb of Moolap.

CFA spokesman Barry Foss said a section of the factory wall would be removed and the
metal taken out of the building.

"About half a tonne has been involved, and we hope to save about $500,000 worth of
magnesium by using heavy machinery."

Water could not be used to quench the fire because of the dangerous reaction it has
with magnesium.

At the height of the blaze, flames were leaping 20 metres into the air and there was
a fear of rain.
