A "substantial number" of workers at the General Electric defense plant here will be laid off, the company announced Thursday.
Arthur Glenn, vice president of GE's Defense Systems Division, refused to say exactly how many workers would be laid off or when, but company sources predicted that 1,000 workers will be fired.
GE officials informed the state that it would lay off about 900 workers over the next 18 months because of a decrease in defense-related orders, according to a Dukakis administration economic affairs official.
