FED:Costello says business must protect workers money

Treasurer PETER COSTELLO has called for business to do more to protect the rights and
entitlements of their workers.

Mr COSTELLO told the John Laws radio program that employers shouldn't expect taxpayers
to always come to the rescue by paying out worker entitlements when a company folds.

His comments come after the government this week decided to jointly fund a $4 million
package to ensure entitlements for the 342 workers of National Textiles.

The National Textile workers have been left without $11 million of entitlements when
the company folded in January.

The government has also set up a scheme to protect up to $20,000 of entitlements for workers.

But Mr COSTELLO says the government needs to limit taxpayer exposure.
